SIL FieldWorks SE (Standard Edition) 4.2
A suite of software tools to help language teams manage language and cultural data, with support for complex scripts.
Downloading and installing
This version of FieldWorks is an outdated stable release. FieldWorks 6.0 is the last release of FieldWorks Standard Edition.
Requirements
Recommended system configuration
- Microsoft Windows® XP Professional with Service Pack 2 on a personal computer with a Pentium IV processor at 1.5 gigahertz (GHz) or higher,
- at least 512 megabytes (MB) of RAM (for serious use, 1 gigabyte (GB) of RAM is recommended),
- and an internal CD-RW drive.
Minimum system requirements
- Computer and processor: Computer with Pentium (or equivalent) at 1 gigahertz (GHz) or higher; Pentium IV recommended.
- Memory: 512 MB of RAM
- Hard disk: Hard disk space requirements will vary depending on existing machine configuration and custom installation choices. In the worst case scenario, 1.3 gigabytes is required for installation, and a further 300 megabytes to run. This can be reduced by deselecting features from the FieldWorks installer wizard. If required supporting software is already present (for example, the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0), the required disk space is reduced.
- Operating system: Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2), or Windows XP Media Center Edition. Windows Vista. (Not tested on Windows 2000.)
- Display: 1024 by 768 pixels screen resolution (for laptops, use native display resolution).
- Peripherals: Mouse or compatible pointing device.
Note: The more RAM and the faster the CPU, the better the software will perform.
Download and install
FieldWorks SE version 4.2 requires Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express, .Net Framework 2.0, Internet Explorer 5.5 or later (Microsoft products) which are all included in the "Full Package" below, but increase the download size. As a result we are providing three downloads.
Furthermore, to reduce download time, a large, optional file containing demo movies has been omitted from every download option, including the so-called full package. See steps 3 and 5 for instructions on how to download and include this file in the installation.
If this computer is running Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or later, you can click here to discover which download is best for this computer.

- Double-click on the file you downloaded above, and select a folder to extract the installer files into.
- Optional step: demo movies have been omitted from the download
packages because of their large size. If you wish to install the demo movies:
- Download the file containing the movies and save it to the FieldWorks subfolder that appeared when you extracted the installer files (this folder also contains a file called SetupFW.msi): FLEx_M.cab (306 MB, MD5 hash: c9eb2581d9de4ebe1937cdfe57414614)
- Double-click on the Setup.exe file.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- To install the demo movies (see step 3), when the FieldWorks installer gets to the Select
Features screen:
- Click on the icon for the movie option you wish to activate
- Select the "Will be installed on local hard drive" option.
- The screen should then look like this.
- By default, the demo movie option is deactivated in the FieldWorks installer. If you activate it when you don't have the FLEx_M.cab file, the installation will fail with an error. See step 3 on downloading this optional file.
