SIL FieldWorks BTE (Bible Translators Edition) 4.0

A suite of software tools to help language teams manage language and cultural data, with support for complex scripts.

Downloading and installing

This version of FieldWorks is an outdated release. For a newer release go to: Latest corporate release, or Stable releases.

Requirements

Recommended system configuration

Minimum system requirements

Note: The more RAM and the faster the CPU, the better the software will perform.

Windows Vista compatibility

Microsoft has announced that SQL Server 2000 (the database FieldWorks is built upon) will not be supported in the next-generation operating system, Windows Vista. Therefore, we do not recommend installing FieldWorks 4.0 on Windows Vista computers. In the next version of FieldWorks, the database will be upgraded.

The second Vista-compatible version is now available for Web download: FieldWorks 4.9. Please note this is a stable release, which means it is not tested as thoroughly as a corporate release such as 4.0.

Download and install

FieldWorks BTE version 4.0 requires MSDE, .Net Framework 2.0, Internet Explorer 5.5 or later (Microsoft products) which are included in the full install but increase the download size dramatically. Keyman is also useful but not required. As a result we are providing four downloads.

Furthermore, to reduce download time, two large, optional files have been omitted from every download option, including the so-called full install. IMPORTANT: if you ignore the directions in steps 4 and 6, you will get an error message during installation, because the default installation settings assume these files are present. See step 4 for instructions on how to download and include these files in the installation.

If this computer is running Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or later, you can click here to discover which of the following download options is best for this computer.

  1. Download one of the following:
    • Full install (minus movie files) that includes everything needed (but not optional movie files) for a computer that meets the minimum requirements (263 MB, MD5 hash: da1eee049d21730cb58a7746fe7f97a5)
    • Full Install (WinXP SP2) (minus movie files) Smaller than Full Install, but includes everything necessary (but not optional movie files) for a computer running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (188 MB, MD5 hash: f4931b549abe8b318730ed68f7c03a0f)
    • Upgrade from FieldWorks 3.x (minus movie files) Contains just enough for computers that have FieldWorks 3.0 or 3.1 already installed (147 MB, MD5 hash: 04f5f23d9998cb24a5cc0c0098303ffc)
    • FieldWorks BTE only (minus movie files) Download this only if a beta test version newer than June 10, 2006, has been installed on the computer (123 MB, MD5 hash: aea9d2ca40dbd97d0ba4918735ccc273)
  2. Double-click on the file you downloaded.
  3. Unzip to a folder on your machine (you will be prompted for a location).
  4. Essential: There are two files containing optional demo and tutorial movies that have been omitted from every download file package because of their large size.
    1. If you wish to have these movie files, download one or both files containing the movies and save them to the FieldWorks folder that appeared when you extracted the installer files in step 3 (the same folder as the SetupFW.msi file):
      • SetupFW5.cab, contains Language Explorer demo movies (306 MB, MD5 hash: f317ee792512a1ff792b68de7f249b75)
      • SetupFW6.cab, contains Translation Editor tutorial movies (25.4 MB, MD5 hash: c9a1f85018480932026f01eefe2e0b07)
    2. If you do not download these you MUST follow the directions in step 6, otherwise you WILL get an error message during installation, because the default installation settings assume these files are present.
  5. Double-click on the Setup.exe file.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions. Essential: if you have not downloaded both movie files, you MUST deactivate the unused movie options when running the FieldWorks installer or else it will fail with error 1311 - source file not found. To deactivate the movie options:
