Localizations

The FieldWorks user interface is available in a number of languages. Although the localization (the translation of the interface) for some of these languages is not complete, we have made available the work that has been done so far. We welcome feedback on the translations; offers of help to translate the interface into additional languages are also welcome.

Some of the localizations have been updated after the most recent version of FieldWorks was released. You can download a language pack that will allow you to update the localization without reinstalling FieldWorks, as long as you have the appropriate (matching) version of FieldWorks installed. The updated packages that are available (and the dates they were updated) are shown below. (To see if the language pack for your version of FieldWorks was updated after that version was released, compare the date given for that language pack with the date you will find by doing Help > About Language Explorer in your version of FieldWorks.)

Note: these language packs have not undergone as thorough testing as the localizations that are shipped with FieldWorks. We do not expect these to result in crashes, but there may be errors in the translations. Please send your feedback .

Note: In FieldWorks 7, the language packs also contain the list content, for instance translations of words like “prefix”, “suffix”, “antonym”, etc.  A few of the packs also contain some portion of the semantic domains list translated into that language. Unlike previous versions, you will need to install the language pack if you want to use the pre-translated lists in that language.  For packs that ship with FieldWorks, it is enough to choose the language pack during the installation of FieldWorks.  It is only necessary to download one of the packs below if it has been updated since you installed FieldWorks.

To install a language pack:

  1. Download the file by clicking on the link below.
  2. Exit from FieldWorks.
  3. Double click on the file.
  4. It will place the localized files in the appropriate places in your FieldWorks installation.
  5. Start FieldWorks. To use the new language pack, go to Tools > Options and select the language from the list of user interface languages.

I recommend that the website for SIL Fieldworks also be designed in each language for which there is an interface. It will make the work more sustainable for linguists and language speakers who do not necessarily read/speak English but who read/speak Spanish, Chinese, French, Indonesian, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Hindi, Korean, and Turkish.

    Thanks a bunch!

Turkish would be very helpful to me. We plan to use Turkish for many of our source texts and we plan to work with with minorities who speak Turkish and not English.

    thanks!

Do you happen to have an Italian version? Thank you.

  4. Beth Bryson says:

We don’t currently have an Italian version, but if you would like to work on it, I can supply you with the files! I could also show you the sources for Spanish and French–it would likely be much easier to translate from those, since English is so ambiguous (in terms of what words are verbs, adjectives, nouns, and what modifies what). The Spanish and French versions have been checked pretty carefully.

Similarly, for Turkish, if there is someone who wants to work on it, I’m happy to supply the files with the strings to be translated. Let me know.
