Localizations

The FieldWorks user interface is available in a number of languages. For many languages, the semantic domain list is also available, and for some the “list items” (terms like “prefix/suffix or “compound/derivative”) are translated.

The available User Interface translations and Semantic Domain translations are installed with FLEx. To get the latest version of the translated lists, just add that language as an analysis language. If you have an existing project that already has this language as an analysis language, and there are translations newer than what you have, you will need to import the updated translated list to get the new content. Expand the section below for instructions on how to do this.

In FieldWorks 8, when a writing system is added to a project, localized translated list content for that writing system will be installed automatically. If you need to update translations for a writing system already in your project, you would use a procedure similar to the one described below. Assuming a 64-bit version of Windows, and a default installation, the file you would choose would be c:\Program Files (x86)\SIL\FieldWorks 8\Templates\LocalizedLists-??.zip. Note that you are importing a zip file rather than xml.

  1. Start FieldWorks.
  2. Open the project you want to update the translated lists in.
  3. Go to the Lexicon Area.
  4. Choose the option File/Import/Translated List Content.
  5. Navigate to c:\Program Files\SIL\FieldWorks\Templates. Choose the file LocalizedLists-??.xml (where ?? is replaced by your language code). Click Open.
  6. In Format/Set up Writing Systems, make sure your language is added as an Analysis Writing System.
  7. Now go to the Lists area. Depending on what was in the language pack, you may see semantic domains in that language, or other lists (such as Morpheme Type). However, not all list content is translated in all languages.

If the localization package you want is updated for a released version, you can see the change on the release page of the distribution in the “What’s New” section. Installing the version of FieldWorks will automatically include the most recent version of the localization packages.

If you find errors in the translations or would like to contribute to existing or future translations, please send your feedback .

I recommend that the website for SIL Fieldworks also be designed in each language for which there is an interface. It will make the work more sustainable for linguists and language speakers who do not necessarily read/speak English but who read/speak Spanish, Chinese, French, Indonesian, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Hindi, Korean, and Turkish.

    Thanks a bunch!
    Ramon

Turkish would be very helpful to me. We plan to use Turkish for many of our source texts and we plan to work with with minorities who speak Turkish and not English.

    thanks!

  3. Brandon Cook says:

Do you happen to have an Italian version? Thank you.

  4. Beth Bryson says:

We don’t currently have an Italian version, but if you would like to work on it, I can supply you with the files! I could also show you the sources for Spanish and French–it would likely be much easier to translate from those, since English is so ambiguous (in terms of what words are verbs, adjectives, nouns, and what modifies what). The Spanish and French versions have been checked pretty carefully.

Similarly, for Turkish, if there is someone who wants to work on it, I’m happy to supply the files with the strings to be translated. Let me know.
