FieldWorks 8.3.0 Alpha is now available for download.

For a while now we have been mentioning features that would be in “the next release of FieldWorks”. Now you finally have a chance to preview some of those features.
We have just made available an alpha version of FieldWorks 8.3. Although it does not have all the features we plan to implement, we believe it demonstrates many of the improvements we have been working on, and that it is stable and safe to use with your data. However, because it is still early, we are calling it an alpha rather than a beta.
Full details are available in the ‘What’s New’ section.

We invite you to try it out. You may send feedback to FLEx_Errors@sil.org.

Beta release FieldWorks 8 is now available for download.

The quantum leap in FieldWorks 8 is the ability to send/receive changes between occasionally connected users, thus being able to collaborate on the same project despite geographic separation.

To help you get started with send/receive successfully, please read the “Using Send/Receive” section on the download page.

The What’s New section on the download page lists a few other new features as well.

Recently we have worked on making it easier to add semantic domains to an existing lexicon. The next release of FLEx will have various tools that should help:

  1. There is now a Find in the semantic domain chooser available in Lexicon Edit, and in Categorized Entry (in future called “Collect Words”.) Here is the Choose Semantic Domains dialog, showing the results of a search for “wedding”.
  2. Find Semantic Domain

  3. There is now a “Suggest” feature in the semantic domain chooser available in Lexicon Edit which proposes some potentially relevant domains for the sense based on the Gloss, Definition and Reversal Index fields. Here is what happens after I click Suggest for this sense.
  4. Domain suggestions for sense

Not all suggestions are selected by default. Here are the results of clicking Suggest in the sense meaning father:
    Domain suggestions for sense

  5. It is not yet finished, but we hope to also provide a similar Suggest function in Bulk Edit, so that you can use this feature on multiple entries at a time, rather than just one sense at a time.

There are some minor UI tweaks being made on the parts that are basically finished (e.g. the order suggestions are displayed in is being improved so that selected ones are always at the top.)

At the same time as doing this work, we also fixed some known bugs in the Classified Dictionary view, and made it configurable and exportable, so that in future Pathway can make a lovely printable document of the semantic domain index for you, or include the index as part of a website.

In answer to a question, yes, you can also do the Find using the numeric abbreviation. At the moment, you need to type the full-stops/periods as well.
Find using an abbreviation

A basic type-ahead has also been added to FieldWorks since the last release, which allows you to type a word or numeric abbreviation directly in a list reference field, such as Semantic Domains.

(I call it basic because there are various oddities that could be improved. For example, there is no feedback if you type something that doesn’t exist. Someone could be confused that what they type is not saved in the field when they leave it, in that case.)

  • Dictionary view now has Bidi support – Where you would normally just put a space, if it might be between two pieces of LTR text that should be ordered with the first one on the right, you need the three-letter sequence RLM, space, RLM, where RLM is the Unicode character U+200F, the Right-to-left marker.
  • “Parse Words in Text” while on the Analyze tab now shows the results immediately.
  • Lots of bugs were fixed!

FieldWorks 7.0.5 has been released for Windows users!

A sample of what’s new since FieldWorks 6:

  • Greatly improved performance, e.g. it is faster to switch between entries in Lexicon Edit.
  • FieldWorks BTE can be updated with patches; you do not need to download the entire program each time there are new bug fixes available.
  • Backup files can include settings (e.g. dictionary configuration) and linked files (e.g. pictures) as well as data.
  • A restore can be triggered by double-clicking on the fwbackup file in Windows Explorer.

For more details see the sections “What’s New” and “What’s Different” on the download page.

We recommend users of FieldWorks 6 (and earlier) upgrade to FieldWorks 7.0.5. Please follow the on-screen instructions and read the extra information on migrating your projects to FieldWorks 7 format.

The Linux version is still in beta but can be downloaded here by those who wish to try it and give feedback.
